Houston Court Reporters Association
Message From the President
by Tamara Vinson
As my year as your HCRA president comes to an end, I’d like to share with you my thoughts about this year. When we started, I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into. I was unsure of myself and of the association’s membership. HCRA has been so strong in the past; could we make it so again? Did anyone even care?
In the learning process, the Board and I have been through a lot this year. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, and through it all, we worked together and made it happen. We started the year with a seminar put on by Jeff Cobb from Stenograph, revealing Case CATalyst4 for the first time nationally. We had a great public meeting at Jalapeno’s - in the middle of a torrential downpour. We handled some legal, political and monetary situations that were new for all of us; and we all learned something.
In the last half of the year, we finally brought to fruition our pet project for the year - HCRA’s Fall Seminar 2002. It was a resounding success. With 170 attendees, eight sessions, 14 speakers, 37 door prizes, and even a seventh-inning stretch, it all came off without a hitch. Special thanks to Mylinda Faircloth, Vonda Treat, and Grayson Clevinger for all their hard work and dedication.
The reason I’ve told you all of these things is twofold. First of all, I wanted you to know how proud I am of HCRA. I am proud of the membership for their continued and consistent support and encouragement. Our membership numbers are up. Our association is thriving. This is truly an association that I am proud to be a part of. Thanks to the speakers, sponsors, attendees, door prize donors, and volunteers, you made the Fall Seminar one of the best I have ever been involved with.
The second thing is, I want to encourage you to get involved. Don’t know what you’re doing? Neither do we! Do you love your profession? So do we. This is only the beginning. In order for HCRA to continue successfully and consistently on its journey, it must be infused regularly with new ideas, new people, and a new energy and commitment from those willing to give back to the profession which we serve, and which serves us, so faithfully. Please get involved. Help us keep the momentum going. I can promise that you’ll be glad you did.
