Houston Court Reporters Association
Message From the President
by Carol N. Castillo, CSR
HCRA President 2003
Becoming your president for HCRA was a big shock for me. I’ve always been what you would call a silent participant in this organization as well as with TCRA and NCRA. When the phone call was made asking me to be your president for HCRA, for the first time in my life, I had a loss of words. For those who know me personally, that’s a big deal. I accepted this position graciously and with no hesitation. My goal as your president is to continue the tradition of making this organization strong and keeping the court reporting profession as informed as possible to the best of my ability.
I would like to congratulate our past president, Tammy Vinson, for the excellent job of rebuilding HCRA to become a strong organization. Tammy met her goals with patience and strength. Thank you, Tammy, for giving your all to HCRA.
This year HCRA has many events planned on our agenda. We are looking forward to increasing our membership along with more student participation. I have sent out forms to the courts and some of our freelance firms to form more committees.
I don’t know if any of you remember the Octopus system. This was a system that HCRA acquired in order to remind our members of events and meetings. Our Octopus system had to be put to sleep due to its age. We have set up a new system called Emagitel. This system is set up through the Internet. It enables us to remind our members of meetings and events through multi-task telephonic messaging.
We had the swearing-in of the new officers in February with a great attendance turnout. Our essay contest winners from both of the court reporting schools were announced at this meeting. This turned out to be a big success.
We had a meeting in May at Vicki McNaughton’s office. At this meeting, issues regarding our legislature were discussed. Again, a great attendance.
Another project that HCRA has begun was Operation HCRA Soldier Drive through the Red Cross. Forms were sent out to many of the courts and some of our local court reporting firms to collect items for our soldiers. So far, this has turned out to be a big success. If you would like to participate, please let HCRA know.
HCRA will be planning our yearly seminar with more speakers, more vendors, and a Saturday afternoon network mixer. We also have planned an exciting Christmas party. Hope to see you there.
HCRA is hoping to rekindle our relation with you.
