COURT REPORTER'S DAY AT THE CAPITOL
LaVearn Ivey, TCRA Area Director, Seat 8

Ever wonder what the legislature does when they meet in Austin every other year? Oh, so you didn’t realize they only meet in odd-numbered years? Well, that’s the way the system works. From January to June of odd-numbered years, the legislature meets to make new laws and change or refine laws already on the books.

On March 9, a group of court reporters visited the state capitol and met with our local representatives and senators to encourage them to vote for or against bills that affect us.
HB 1758 is a bill that would affect reporters who work out of state.
HB 4/SB 3 is the tort reform bill. It will impact cases involving medical malpractice.
HB 1059 is the Cart bill that would regulate reporters who work with the hearing impaired.
HB 1181/SB 273, the Sunset bill, is a bill relating to the continuation and functions of the Court Reporter’s Certification Board. This bill is now waiting for the Governor’s signature.

Every legislator we met with expressed their delight at having us visit them in their Austin office. It was a great experience seeing how bills are filed and how they work their way through the system. After we had visited the offices of our respective legislators, met with them or their office staff, we met on the steps of the capitol and took a picture which will be published in the TCRA Journal. We had a great time walking the halls of the state capitol and being a part of the system.
