Area Director's Report

The Texas Court Reporters Association held its board meeting on December 1, 2001, at the Wyndham Hotel in Arlington, Texas.

One exciting bit of news from headquarters. There are now 865 TCRA members who have given their e-mail addresses to Janet Morrow, our Executive Director. Having this list will make it much easier and much quicker to communicate with our members, especially during a legislative session. TCRA does not sell or give out e-mail addresses, so members do not have to worry about unwanted solicitations if they communicate this information to TCRA headquarters. Those of you who don't yet have an e-mail address, get one! Keep in touch with what is going on in your profession.

Although 2002 is a non-legislative year, it is a Sunset Review year for the Court Reporters Certification Board. This means the board will be reviewed to see if it is necessary and fulfills its function. The first meeting of the Sunset Committee was December 11, 2001.   We will keep you apprised of any actions of the committee or if TCRA needs member input to the committee.

The Officials Committee is working on compiling a master list of suggested changes to the CRCB concerning the Texas Uniform Format Manual. If you have any suggestions, please contact Robin Cooksey, chair of the committee, at (409) 539-7860.

Midyear Seminar will be held this year on February 9 and 10 in San Antonio, Texas, at the St. Anthony's Hotel, (210) 227-4392.   The room cut-off date is January 9, 2002, so make your reservations now if you have any intention of going!

Peggy Antone and Susan Henley, Area Directors 8 and 9, reported that so far this area has raised, through a regional seminar raffle, a BACRAT raffle, the sale of Discover Toys, and cash donations, over $500 towards the goal of $1000 by March 31, 2002, for the Houston area to go into the TCRA general fund.    We appreciate the efforts and donations of those who have helped out so far. If any of you would like to donate or have any other fundraising ideas, please let us know. We are really trying to avoid having another garage sale!

The annual convention is going to be held at Del Lago, Texas, near Conroe, June 20-23, 2002. This is close to Houston and is a great opportunity to earn CEUs in a resort setting that your family will enjoy, too. If you would like a preview of this beautiful setting, you are invited to attend the next board of directors meeting at Del Lago Golf Resort and Conference Center, 600 Del Lago Blvd., Montgomery, Texas, (800) 863-9208, on Saturday, March 16. This is your opportunity to meet the officers and board of TCRA and to give your input and ideas to the fellow reporters who run your organization. We hope to see you there.
