Merrill J. Osborn
by Vickie MacNaughton

For those of us who had the pleasure of knowing and working with Merrill J. Osborn, we knew him as a gentle man with a kind heart and sincere smile. Merrill was the kind of professional court reporter whose fabulous reputation made me proud to be a court reporter. He always gave a full 110% to the service of his clients.

Merrill graduated from McMahon School of Stenotype in August 1968 and was awarded his NCRA Certificate of Merit in 1986. He was the owner of Lone Star Reporting in Houston until 1990 when he joined Sunbelt Reporting & Litigation Services, where he worked until his brief illness this year.

During his short time in the VA hospital with Hepatitis C, he found such pleasure each and every day in the many kindnesses bestowed upon him by his family, friends and work associates. He smiled as he shared his stories, laughed at our jokes, and opened his heart to so many during his lifetime. He passed away quietly on May 30, 2002.

We have so many fond memories of our time spent with Merrill. He was our friend, our mentor, and a court reporter like no other.

Word Droppers
by Debbie C.

Hi, Everyone.

As most of you know, I've just started teaching at Alvin.  Some of the material we're dictating dates back to the Sixties and looks like the dog got ahold of it because it's that thin, onion-skin paper that's been handled for 40 years!  And the carbon copies are very difficult to read.  So if you have an especially interesting case OR just want to clean out your office, we'd LOVE to have your transcripts. Also, if anyone can get their hands on fresh jury charge material, that would be great.

If you have anything, just bring it to the next BACRAT meeting; and I'll get it from you.  I PROMISE I'm going to be there; we're presenting the scholarship awards.  If you're not attending, call me; I'll make arrangements to pick it up.  281-480-3925.

By the way, the Word Droppers club is ALWAYS interested in guest speakers. —Debbie C.

WHO IS NVRA ANYWAY?
by Stephanie McClure

I'm sure by now you've received the card advertising the NVRA seminar in San Antonio.  For those that might not know, NVRA is the National Verbatim Reporters Association and is the association for the voice writers (Stenomaskers).  We have so many seminars in our general area.  We just had a terrific TCRA annual convention in Del Lago.  HCRA has a seminar September in Houston, and BACRAT (Bay Area Court Reporters Association of Texas) has an October seminar in Galveston.

We need to support our local/state associations before we support and pay our good money to an association that we (NCRA members) voted last August to not include in NCRA.  If you're curious about NVRA, you can go to their website at
www.nvra.org.  You'll see that they are still claiming their style of reporting is superior to ours.  Do you really want to support this organization?  Not me.
